Night Eating Syndrome
This is a pretty new eating disorder, where people has a lack of appetite in the morning but starts overeating once night falls, along with agitation and insomnia. It is not just an eating disorder; it is a mood and sleeping disorder as well. Bad eating habit is not the sole reason behind this eating disorder; it is a clinical illness caused by the change in hormonal levels.
The signs and symptoms of Night Eating Syndrome are as follows:
- Little or no appetite for breakfast, no matter how much was eaten the night before.
- Eats more food after dinner than during that meal.
- Takes more than half of daily food between dinner and breakfast, and frequently gets up to snack.
- The eating pattern persists for at least two months.
- Feel tense, anxious, upset, or guilty while eating.
- NES is stress related and is often accompanied by depression.
- Has trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, and gets up to eat often.
- Have great liking for carbohydrates: sugary and starch.
- Night-eating syndrome is not a short episode, and involves continual eating throughout evening hours.
